Our Genealogy

Harris, Jones, Parmelee, and Burk Family Lines

Last updated: 6 May 2005

"What's this about?"

The fundamental purpose of genealogy work is to do the required ordinances of the gospel for those members of our family that can't do it for themselves.

So we've organized a means for gathering family information, and seeing that those ordinances are done. This effort will be coordinated and documented here on the website, which will be updated as we figure out good ways to do things. Check back often.

The process is simple:

  1. Pick a name. Select someone from the Assignments section below, and email me your selection (someday this will be automated)
  2. Gather info. Review what information and sources we already have, then fill in the holes (including information about their children and marriage, if possible)
  3. Return and report. Submit the data back to me via email, then go through the process to get it submitted to the temple

Assignments

Generations are counted back from my children, who are Generation 1. Generations 1-4 are assumed to be completed because all of generation 3 is still alive. Generations 5 and 6 are listed here, and when all the names have been assigned, I'll add generation 7. Generation 5 should be easy, most of the work is done, we just need someone to review it and make sure.

Colors indicate which family line a name comes from, e.g. Harris, Jones, Parmelee, or Burk. A check mark (√) means that research into this individual is considered complete.

These are the status codes:

FAQs

"Now what do I do? I know almost nothing about genealogy, where can I learn about it?"

BYU's Religion 261 (Introduction to Family History) website is a pretty good place to start.

"Where can I download PAF (the Church's free genealogy software for Windows)? Where can I search the Church's archives online?"

The answer to both these questions is FamilySearch.com, the Church's Family History website.

Mac users have a mixed blessing -- Leister Reunion, is considered the best Family History software on any platform, but it costs money. The free PAF is not available for Mac OS X.

Note, for this project, you can just type the information into an email if you like, or you can mail me a copy of a Family Group Sheet. No technology required.

"What information is required for temple ordinances to be performed?"

The bare minimum to do someone's individual ordinances is a name (first or last), sex, and a date and place of at least one event (birth, christening, marriage, death or burial). For sealing to parents, you need the first or last name of the father. To seal a couple, you need the husband's name and date and place of marriage.

Interestingly, you must consult the Church's Family History Department before you are allowed to submit any individual born before 1500. More info about submitting names.

"My computer skills are very limited, how can I help?"

Just call me at (520) 889-2291. We'll discuss what contributions you can make.

"My question isn't answered here..."

Email me your question and I'll do my best to address it and include the answer here.
